Apple is reportedly developing a new feature for AirPods that enables real-time translation of in-person conversations between different languages. This functionality is expected to be introduced later this year as part of an AirPods software update, coinciding with the release of iOS 19.
The feature will allow AirPods users to engage in conversations with speakers of other languages seamlessly. For example, if an English-speaking user is conversing with a Spanish speaker, the iPhone will detect the Spanish speech, translate it into English, and relay it through the user’s AirPods. Conversely, the English speaker’s response will be translated into Spanish and played aloud through the iPhone’s speakers.
While Apple’s Translate app, introduced in 2020, already offers translation capabilities, integrating this feature directly into AirPods aims to streamline the process and provide a more natural conversational experience. It’s worth noting that competitors like Google’s Pixel Buds have offered similar translation features since 2017.
In addition to the live translation feature, Apple is planning a significant overhaul of its software this year, including redesigns of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS to enhance user experience and interface consistency across devices.
This development reflects Apple’s ongoing commitment to integrating advanced language processing capabilities into its products, aiming to break down language barriers and facilitate global communication.
